In 1999, our daughter was diagnosed with T1 Diabetes and, just like most families, our lives changed forever. In the fall of 2002, our lives seemed to be turned upside down again and our daughter's BG levels began to be uncontrollable despite following all the rules. Within a few months and after many trips to the hospital, we realized that our only hope was to try pump therapy. Just like most parents, I had many concerns around pump therapy. With those concerns and my daughter's varied activities in mind, I designed a Pump Pouch for her. I felt that she needed something to hold the pump securely to her body during sports, look like a fashion statement rather than a medical device, eliminate dangling tubing and be comfortable to wear while sleeping. When her CDE saw the first pouch, she fell in love with it & told me there was a need for what I had made. She soon convinced me to make them available to others, as there was nothing like our pouches available in Canada. With the fact that we have no insurance coverage for our daughter's pump or supplies, I decided that this might help to offset some of our costs.
With keeping in mind the expense of diabetes & pumping, I have tried to keep the pump pouches as inexpensive as possible. Our 14-year-old pumping daughter helps to pick out the fabrics for the pump pouches so that they are truly from a young person's perspective and something that both young kids and teenagers would want to wear. The pump pouches are available with or without an elastic belt. All the pump pouches shown on our pump page web site will fit most pumps. I am also now making a pouch for the CGMs. Upon request, I will make custom pump pouches so that if someone is going to a wedding and wants a more sophisticated looking pouch to match their outfit, they can send me the fabric & have a custom pump pouch made with it. I also make special theme pouches such as Halloween & Christmas.
Thank you for reading our story.
P.S. Thanks to pump therapy, our daughter now has her health back. We still have the unexpected BG levels at times, but they are much easier to get back on track.
